David Schlossberg: Musician, Composer Drummer, this one goes to eleven…

I was born in New Jersey, grew up in Manhattan and currently reside in The San Francisco area.

I am a funky drummer who specializes in groove and improvisation based music and I’m well adept at a variety of styles including Jazz, Blues, R&B, Latin, Jam Band, New Orleans, Funk, Funk and a little more Funk, and if you twist my arm I’ll play the fuuunnkkk.

I played my first gig at the age of 16 at the famed CBGB’s, and have been playing professionally since 1987.

I was introduced to jazz in the ninth grade by listening to BirdFlight, the music of Charlie Parker hosted by Phil Schaap on WKCR every morning on the drive to school with my dad. Some of my other influences include Jaco Pastorius, Jimi Hendrix, John Scofield, Pete Townshend, Ray Davies, Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock, and Donald Fagen to name a few.

In 1986 I joined the Drummers Collective (The Collective) where I met Mike Clark (Herbie Hancock and The Head Hunters, Brand X), whom I studied with for over six years.

In 1992 I co-founded First House with guitarist Pete Kovachevich and bassist Pawel Maciwoda (Scorpions). Kenji Hino (Jino) took over for Pawel in late ‘93 and

this was our line-up for the next 6+ years.

Some of the other groups and people I’ve played live and/or recorded with are The Dreyer Brothers, the legendary Buzzy Linhart, Warren Haynes, Gregg Allman, Allen Woody, John Popper and Bobby Sheehan of Blues Traveler, Chris Barron and Mark White of The Spin Doctors, T Lavitz with Widespread Panic, JJ Appleton, Turnip Stampede and Peter Levin (Organist – Blind Boys of Alabama).

I have composed music for corporate presentations, fashion shows and independent movies. I consider myself a musician who plays to support the lyrics, not just the music, and I am equally at home playing a whole show based upon improvisation off the top of my head without prior rehearsal, or by leading the band through strict arrangements, although I prefer the former.
